Wow, I just got off the phone with the electric company who services House #2 to set up service. I was on the line with them for over 30 mins. Geesh. I use the same company for my personal residence electric service, so the $100 deposit was waived, but I still have to pay an $18 "initiation" fee. Before that, I called the water company (which, BTW, was not who the HOA said it was). That call lasted 10 mins. I still have to go by their office, in person, to sign some paperwork and put down a $50 deposit. Before either of those, I made a call with my inspector to set up a tentative inspection. Now all I have to do is call the gas company to see if they service gas to the house (I'm not sure at all), and, if so, to set up gas service.
To top it all off, when I met my agent last Friday to sign paperwork, she said she'd be out of town this Thu & Fri (when I wanted the inspection done). I called her earlier today to see if someone else in her office could unlock the door for me in her absence. Then in the same conversation, she said HUD returned the paperwork because I didn't put my middle initial on one of the lines. Now I have to rush over to her office after work and sign one sticking line on a sheet of paper so she can send it back to them today. Joy.
Yeah, those little things the gurus never tell you about. ;-)

Hee hee.. All the fun little details involved in REI.. I must say though, I've never had any problems with utilities. It's generally a 5 minute phone call for each one for me and I've never had to put down a deposit, even when I don't use the utility for my home. But I still have to pay the stupid "connection" and "setup" fees. And of course, also the "disconnection" fees when you sell the place..
Yeah, this one electric company goes through all these formalities when setting up service (and disconnecting it). When I first called, the lady misunderstood what it was I wanted and transferred me to some department that deals with new constructions and installing the service. Argh! When I finally got transferred to the right place, I could tell right away that I was talking to someone in India. I have nothing against other cultures, but I hate having to continuously say "Could you repeat that, please?" :(
