OT: Phishing

I received what looked to be a very legitimate email from: "NCUA.gov - verification@ncua.gov", saying I needed to click on a link to start the process of verifying some information about my accounts since a case had been opened. I must say the email looked VERY legitimate, but I still had an inkling of suspicion - especially since the URL on the link went to an IP address and not a DNS address, and there was no personal information in the email. Sure enough, I used a test computer at work and went to NCUA.gov, and right on the front page they have an alert about phishing. I've had several emails from supposed banks in my email that were easily recognizable as phishing scams, but this one was probably the most legitimate-looking. Beware!

There's another type of thing called pharming, which redirects traffic going to a legitimate website to the hacker's website of choice. If they look very similar (and I have seen a fake bank site that I couldn't tell was fake AT ALL), anyone could be fooled. I get to deal with pharming, phishing, and other viruses at work.
