Mother Nature's Wrath
It appears that forecasters are pretty sure Hurricane Rita will make landfall somewhere along the Texas coast late Friday or Saturday. All indications are it will hit around the Galveston area and be a category 4 storm upon landfall. Galveston, and other areas, have already begun mandatory evacuations. Being in the Austin area means we will be spared the brunt of the storm. However, we are still predicted to get heavy rains, damaging winds, and possibly a tornado or two. Having lived through Hurricane Gilbert while stationed in San Antonio in 1988, I can tell you even being 100's of miles away from landfall, you can still get hit hard. Even though Gilbert made landfall 125 miles south of Brownsville, TX, we still got hit with several tornados. Luckily, nobody was killed. I hope the same can be said of this storm afterward.

I'll pray for you guys. They're saying now that Rita might be a category 5 by the time it makes landfall. Hold on to your britches!
Thanks Trisha. I'm hoping for the best, and fearing for the worse. I'm more afraid of the tornados it will spawn more than anything. And House #1 sits right in the middle of flat terrain, too. Time to double-check my insurance coverage. :-/
FWIW, the models are hinting that Rita is going to stall in Central/N. Central TX after landfall. COuld be some serious flooding coming to TX
Richard - Thanks for the kind words. People have already cleared the shelves of items already down here! Generators are as rare as hen's teeth. Gonna be nasty.
Trisha - BTW, the storm track has it headed your way as well. True, it will probably only be a tropical storm or depression by that time, but still a lot of punch left. You and Michael be careful!
Thanks, Steve! Maybe it'll be a good excuse not to go to work! ;-)
