New Marketing Manager

These last few weeks of Septemeber have really taken me away from REI for the most part. Not only have I taken on more work at my JOB, but my marketing was put on hold slightly due to Hurricane Rita (it turns out all we got was a little wind - no rain, no tornados, and no damaging winds). I've also been helping my in-laws prepare for their moving-in at the end of the month. The last few weekends (and even a few weekdays), I've been helping them move stuff to storage. It has also given us a chance to put some of our stuff in storage. In addition to those things, we've also been preparing for our neighborhood's semi-annual garage sale this coming weekend. Whatever we don't end up selling, we are going to give away to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. We spent the entire weekend cleaning-up the garage in preparation for the sale. I admit the garage needed a good cleaning as I've neglected it for the past 6-9 months. I threw away a bunch of trash, arranged things better, and am getting rid of a lot of stuff in the sale. I also boxed-up about 20 cans of paint, varnish, stain, and other hazardous chemicals, and will take all that to the county refuse center sometime this week. I have no idea why I was keeping those things around as most are dried-up and unusable anyway.

I'm hoping after this coming weekend and next week are over, I can get back into the swing of things with REI. I talked briefly about it with my MIL over the weekend. She said from her experience, I am not doing enough (and I agree). She said I need to be putting signs out all over the place, and not just a few areas. If I wanted to get the phone ringing 10-15 times/day, I need to be putting signs out EVERYWHERE. She then said that once her and my FIL move in, they will go out on Fridays and Saturdays to put out the signs for me. Likewise, they will help me by putting my biz cards out and by soliciting my business in other ways (flyers, mailings). WHEW! This is the kind of help I needed as I feel so overwhelmed with my own JOB and stuff at home. An added bonus is they both speak fluent Spanish, so she wants to add Spanish to all of my marketing material in order to tap that market. This should give me a few more calls than most investors in the area who target English-only customers.

Wow, cool! Your in-laws sound like really nice people. With your new marketing team, I'm sure you'll see more REI action soon!

Yeah, they have helped us a lot already. One of the reasons they are moving in is to help us with the twins. My wife and I will have our hands full with them and our then almost 3yr old daughter, so we will need all the help we can get. In the meantime, they said they would help me with REI. It just remains to be seen how much help they'll be able to provide in that venture once the twins arrive. I'm still hoping I can keep REI at arm's length and not let it slip away when the twins arrive. :-/
