House #1 - Day 11

My FIL painted two coats in the master bedroom before I arrived. He left about an hour before I got there, so I didn't have a chance to thank him. That only left the office/nursery and utility room to paint inside. So, once again, after work I get home, change into my "paint" clothes and head out to the property to paint. I managed to get one coat on both the office/nursery and utility rooms. Both of the rooms were a little harder than normal because they both have shelves. My FIL had taped the office/nursery, but didn't tape around the shelves (I'm guessing he didn't know if I was going to paint them as well or not). I decided to leave the shelves white, and manuevered the paint brush around them. The utility room was equally hard as it had a lot of nooks-and-crannies, plus the shelves. I decided to just leave the light fixture, A/C vent and exhaust vents up and just paint around them. It came out looking nice. I'll go back tonight and paint a second coat in both rooms, and I'll be done. I also took some time afterward doing clean-up work. I put wall plates back in all the rooms as well as light fixtures and A/C vents. That took a lot of time. I also removed tape from the places we already finished and did some general trash removal. I'm not sure if my FIL will show up today or not to finish, but if not, I know what's in store for me. So, my task list now looks like this:
  1. Paint the master bedroom (two coats).
  2. Paint the office/nursery (two one coat).
  3. Paint the utility room (two one coat).
  4. Clean & paint exterior.
  5. Clean-up all the mess from painting.
  6. Install the microwave/vent hood.
  7. Steam/shampoo the carpet.
  8. Clean the bathrooms (again).
  9. Clean the vinyl flooring in the breakfast, kitchen, utility, and bathrooms.
  10. Plant shrubs and mulch the front.
  11. Mow/clean the yard.
When I was leaving the neighbrohood, I found another home that look abandoned. It had one of those 'winterized' papers in the window, but no other information. It also didn't have a missing deadbolt, so I dismissed it as a HUD foreclosure. I was peeking through the windows when a man came up to me and asked if I was going to buy the house. He was a big guy with a mechanics uniform on, so I suspected he was a neighbor. We chatted for a little while, and he said the place was unlocked, if I wanted to see the inside, so I did. It really looks like a nice little house. We left the house and chatted some more in the front yard. He went on to explain all about the person who lived there, what the neighborhood is like, and a bunch of other things. He thought it was a HUD foreclosure, too, and I think it really is also, but it's still in the preprocessing stage. I told him I look for houses people no longer want, and gave him my name and number on a piece of paper (DANG! No biz cards!!). I thanked him for his time and left. This was the first time I actually marketed myself, and I thought I did pretty dang good. :-)

Well, the weather forecast is calling for rain today, tomorrow, and possibly Friday, so any outside work may have to wait until Saturday. I figure we'll finish the inside painting today, and can start cleaning up from all the painting. I wanted to wait until Saturday to install the MW/vent hood, but may have to do it sooner (Thursday?), since I want to leave Saturday open for outdoor stuff. I'm also floating the idea of painting the master bath. It has a couple of scuff marks on the walls, but I'm not sure I want to go through the trouble of taping and painting. Also, I don't know if I'll have enough paint left over to do it. With Sunday booked, and me wanting to get this listed next Monday, I'm really pressed for time now. We'll see.

It looks like my FIL won't be helping me today, so I'll have to paint both rooms by myself, as well as clean-up the place. Today is my "late" day at work, so I'll have one less hour to do all the things I plan today.

Just to drop a note on biz cards. I got mine free (250 of them) at www.VistaPrint.com . They have a nice selection and all you have to do is pay for Shipping and Handling.

BTW, keep up the good work. As Rich Dad says, you get rich by what you do in your spare time. Keep it up! The goal is almost in sight for this first deal!

Andviv - See my latest blog entry for details. Hopefully, I'll be finished by the end of the day on Saturday - (but nothing ever seems to go according to plan). :-/ :-)

anibal - I heard that the free biz cards from VistaPrint come with their own advertising on the back. Is this true? I guess beggers can't be choosy, though, and for free (except S&H) it's an excellent way to market yourself. Thanks!
